Priority access to NHS 111 *6 service
To give them faster access to the NHS 111 clinical assessment service (CAS) out of hours, they can call 111 and then *6.
This service aims to reduce the number of calls to 999 and visits to local emergency departments if these aren’t the most appropriate course of action for patients.
Clinical staff can call 111*6 between 6.30pm and 8.30am on weekdays and at the weekend, from 6.30pm on Friday until 8.30am on Monday.
Callers will receive a call back from one of the clinicians in the CAS; this could be a GP, a pharmacist, a dental nurse or a mental health professional depending on the patient’s needs.
The clinician will assess the patient’s symptoms and decide on the support required, including referral to another service or an on-site visit.
